East Terrace in Adelaide City has long been home to one of Adelaide’s grooviest restaurants, Africola. Nestled along the spiffy dining strip, the South African eatery offers the whole kit and caboodle, not only serving exquisite cuisine, but an unforgettable dining experience amongst flamboyant artworks and eccentric decor – catering to all five senses. And blessed be, the Africola team have decided to open a second space, Africola Canteen on The Parade in Norwood.
Come late July on a date unbeknownst, Africola Canteen will open the doors to their new casual setting where you can find an array of plant-focused flavours, along with plenty of grains and some impeccable meat cookery. A sneak peak into what you can expect to dive into at the Canteen include; the whole cauliflower with turmeric butter and tahini, as well as the green goddess chicken – a signature dish by owner and chef, Duncan Welgemoed. These mouth-watering offerings are set to feature alongside a rotating selection of salads from a whopping list of more than 50.
Development Chef Imogen Czulowski says, “We won’t be shy with the garlic, chilli and acid.”
Head Chef Joel Tisato continues, “Africola Canteen is a chance for customers to drop in and quickly grab their Africola favourites to take home or enjoy with mates on The Parade. The menu leans into what makes the original restaurant so great – it caters for all dietary and lifestyle requirements – but unlike the original restaurant you don’t have to book weeks in advance.”
While Chef Duncan says, “People have been asking us to open a second restaurant for ages, so you can stop now, ‘cause that day is almost here. This is the everyday Africola experience; think of Africola Canteen as Iggy Pop to Africola’s The Stooges, it’s as fun and delicious as the original but with a few twists to make it a place that stands on its own.”
In addition to their scrumptious fare, Africola Canteen will feature a list of Australia’s best non-alcoholic drinks with a range of shrubs, organic sodas and kombuchas on offer, as well as Africola’s famous condiments which will finally be available to purchase, including the Mpumalanga Fire Sauce.
Africola Canteen’s opening hours are thankfully vast – from 10.30am to 7pm every dang day. Until then, stay tuned for the mysterious opening date!
