After sold out shows on Broadway and West End, Girl from the North Country makes its Australian Premier at Sydney Festival next year. The Olivier Award-winning musical features reimagined versions of legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan’s songs. The musical is set to open at the newly renovated Theatre Royal in Sydney before moving to Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre.
Girl from the North Country
Bob Dylan fans will be no stranger to the title, it’s one of the folk singer’s most beloved tunes, first recorded way back in 1963.
Written and directed by Conor McPherson, the feel-good musical centres around a group of wanderers who cross paths at a guesthouse in 1930’s America. The entire show features classics like Slow Train Coming, Lay Lady Lay and Hurricane as the story takes us through life in America during the Great Depression.
Australian cast includes Lisa McCune, Zahra Newman, Terence Crawford, Peter Carroll and Helen Dallimore, with more cast members set to be announced at a later stage.
“Our journey from The Old Vic in London to the West End in London and onto Broadway has been monumental, and now as part of the reopening in Sydney of the Theatre Royal. We have managed to find an incredible Australian cast and we can’t wait to bring this magical production to life,” McPherson said in a statement.
