Melbourne is the third most liveable city in the world, and the most liveable city in Australia, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index for 2023. Melbourne was followed closely behind by Sydney in the fourth spot. During the pandemic, these two Australian cities bounced up and down the rankings for the world’s most liveable cities. Now, Melbourne and Sydney have had their scores in the healthcare category improve since last year, giving them high spots for 2023.
Although no other Australian city made it to the top ten, both Perth and Adelaide were considered among the biggest movers up the ranks. Perth jumped up 21 spots, coming in at number 12 on the list. Meanwhile, Adelaide bounced up 19 spots, and also came in at number 12.

Global Liveability Index 2023
The Index, which ranks 173 cities around the world, takes into account more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors spanning five categories: stability (25%), healthcare (20%), culture and environment (25%), education (10%), and infrastructure (20%).
Melbourne received a score of 100 for healthcare, education and infrastructure. Culture and environment received a score of 95.8 and stability received a score of 95.
Sydney also received a score of 100 for healthcare, education and infrastructure. It received a stability score of 95. Finally, its score for culture and environment was 94.4.
While Adelaide and Perth tied for 12th spot, Brisbane came in at number 16.
