South Australia’s iconic State Library has just been named one of the most beautiful in the world, earning second place in the prestigious 1000 Libraries Award. More than 200,000 votes were cast globally, with Trinity College in Dublin taking the top spot. The State Library of South Australia came in just behind, outranking popular spots in Germany, Austria, and Oxford University in England. Rounding out the top three was Switzerland’s historic Abbey Library of St. Gallen. Another Australian gem also made the list, with the State Library of Victoria securing a commendable 7th place.

At the heart of the State Library of South Australia’s global recognition is the iconic Mortlock Chamber — a beloved local treasure that draws readers and history lovers from near and far. Opened in 1884 and designed in French Renaissance style, the chamber is full of vintage charm, with soaring Victorian-era ceilings, intricate balconies, and golden lantern-lit interiors. It’s no stranger to global praise either, having previously earned a spot in the Huffington Post’s list of the world’s most beautiful libraries.
“If you ever want to know what it’s like to have your jaw drop to the floor, take a stroll through the State Library of South Australia — particularly the famous Mortlock Chamber,” the 1000 Libraries website said of the State Library.
“Though the library as a whole was established in 1836, this particular chamber came a bit later, opening in 1884. It has a gorgeous Victorian design with a long, barrel-vaulted skylight that lends an almost transcendent elegance to this literary space.”
