What’s on at The Jazz Room in Adelaide?
The Jazz Room: A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans
Jazz emerged from the cultural melting pot of New Orleans in the early 1900s as African-American musicians combined elements of blues, ragtime, African rhythms, and European harmonies. Improvisation became its defining feature—allowing performers to create unique interpretations — and syncopated rhythms gave it its signature swing.
At “The Jazz Room” in Adelaide, audiences are treated to performances that honour this legacy with songs such as “When The Saints Go Marching In” and “But Not For Me”. Each musician showcases their talent through improvised solos that highlight their instruments’ voices—from swooning saxophones to blaring trumpets. The immersive setting evokes New Orleans’ charm while inviting attendees to connect with jazz’s timeless energy.
The Jazz Room: Tribute to Soul
Blending the heartfelt sounds of gospel with rhythm and blues, the African-American communities originated soul music in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with Detroit, Chicago and Memphis as the epicenters for its development. Characterised by smooth bass lines and melodic brass sections, these tunes evoked feelings and emotions.
The lyrics explored themes of hope, resilience and love and as time progressed, so did soul music. It paved the way for a number of genres including funk, disco, hip-hop, R&B and neo-soul and has influenced artists to this day. Prepare to be dazzled by legendary soul songs, such as “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green and “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding.
The Jazz Room: Tribute to Blues
From the work songs and field hollers of the Deep South emerged blues music, characterized by its distinctive blue notes and call-and-response patterns that became the foundation of modern popular music. Professional musicians recreate the smoky atmosphere of legendary blues venues through classics like “Boom Boom” and “Mannish Boy”, accompanied by the signature instruments that define the genre. This tribute honors the cultural heritage of blues while introducing contemporary audiences to its timeless emotional resonance.
The Jazz Room: A Frank Sinatra & Louis Armstrong Tribute
Not only were they two of the most iconic jazz artists of all time, renowned for their unique voices and delivery, but Sinatra and Armstrong were actually mates in real life. They even performed “Birth of the Blues” together in 1957. This season, you can catch their most beloved songs, including “Fly Me to the Moon” and “What a Wonderful World” at an intimate venue, reminiscent of the ’50s ballrooms.
