What is “We call it Ballet”?
We call it Ballet is a 60-minute show that celebrates ballet in all its glory, while also adding a couple of unexpected elements to make the experience heightened and more accessible. Firstly, the LED lights that are incorporated into the dancers’ costumes create an ethereal effect that not only help with the storytelling, but also make the story of The Sleeping Beauty feel fresh. Then, there’s the element of narration that accompanies the scenes so that new audiences can feel at home and understand the plot as if they were long-time ballet aficionados.
Ballet, its storytelling and the show
The Sleeping Beauty ballet is a classic for a reason: it tells a timeless story through dance, featuring universal themes of love, good versus evil, and redemption. Created by two widely celebrated artists, namely composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa, it perfectly captures the emotional depth of the characters, while embodying the fairy tale nature of the genre.
At We call it Ballet in Adelaide, guests can expect precise choreography, opportune narration, and captivating music, all made more magical by the rich imagery created with the changing LED lights. Each colour symbolises an emotion or mood in a scene, further immersing the audience in the story.
This season, We call it Ballet is tip-toeing into Scott Theatre at The University of Adelaide with a unique twist on a beloved classic. Experience a glittering performance of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty on selected dates over the coming months.
There will be two back-to-back shows on the night, scheduled for 6:30pm and 8:30pm so you can choose the performance that best suits you, and doors open 30 minutes prior.
