The annual Adelaide Festival has been captivating the people of Adelaide and beyond with exceptional cultural and artistic performances since its inception in 1960. With the upcoming ‘Mad March’ season, the Adelaide Festival have their plans well and truly up their sleeve, and they’ve just announced that global sensation, Lorde will be one of the headline acts at the 2023 festival.
Making her first visit to Adelaide since 2014, New Zealand superstar Lorde will take to the stage of Adelaide Oval Village Green for one night of big pop sounds, alongside LA-based trio MUNA, and Adelaide singer-songwriter Stellie.
Lorde’s massive gig in Radelaide celebrates the 2021 release of her long-awaited third studio album, Solar Power and her first new music in four years. The album was released in August 2021 and is a light, summery album inspired by the storied folk songwriters of the 60s and 70s and early 2000s pop.
If you’re unfamiliar with Lorde; she first took to the radio stations in 2013 at 16 years of age, where she release a slew of minimalist, moody and elegantly melodic songs. Her album Pure Heroine, with its breakout single Royals, projected her headfirst into the international musical sphere. And we’d say “ya kidding,” if you’ve not come across the extremely catchy, teen-angsty riffs and lyrics in your time. The people of 2013 juts couldn’t get enough of the banger.
With an impressive two Grammy Awards, charting at number one in over 20 countries, it’s easy to see, or hear, why Lorde has grown to become a household name. With 2017’s follow up, Melodrama, Lorde achieved the superstar status, having exceeded 12 million album sales worldwide and over 10 billion streams.
Of the album Solar Power, Lorde say, “Solar Power is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”
As well as Lorde’s Adelaide Festival appearance, she will also be whizzing across Australia for a three-week whirlwind stint of Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and then over to Perth as part of her album tour.
