On the south-eastern side of Adelaide’s city centre, on Hutt Street, lies the General Havelock, commonly known as the ‘Havey’ – but you already knew that. What’s more important is the pub’s fresh new look in celebration of its whopping 150 years in service.
After a mammoth restoration, the drinking house has swung its doors back open to the public which is bound to revitalise Hutt Street as a hospitality hotspot, at least that’s what Penny Hospitality are envisioning after their acquiring the Havelock.
Penny Hospitality Director, Hugo Pedler, says, “We’ve been working with some of the best craftsmen in Adelaide to restore the front bar, balcony, and upstairs area.”
Upon entry, you can expect to be welcomed by the front bar which has been restored to its classic facade which amps up that old-school pub feel, reminiscent of its 1873 prime.
Make your way upstairs and maxo relaxo atop the newly renovated heritage balcony that boasts 270-degree views of leafy Hutt Street and the partial, distant city skyline.
“The new upstairs area has a great vibe and is super comfortable rain, hail, or shine. With plenty of heaters, cosy couches and a pool table, it’s a great place for mates to gather for a wintry night out.
“But then in Summer, think breezy balcony bevvies in the sun. Our bar staff will be serving up everything from Aperol Spritzes to cold tap beers for patrons to enjoy,” Hugo shares.
Those who love their sports can rally in the beer garden and gaze upon the fruit of their team’s labour screened on a 4.5-metre TV, get comfy in the booth seating, and quench their thirst with plenty of tap beers. There’ll be Saturday DJs spinning tunes too.
And you won’t be going hungry either – the pub has curated some delectable new menu items alongside a line-up of pub classics – anticipating the Havey as a new era bistro pub.
Head Chef, Billy Preace, says, “Gone are the days of average pub food. You can expect a really great, high quality dining experience at the Havey now.
“Our new menu is made up of local produce and focuses on great pub classics and beyond, and we are proud to cater to many different dietary requirements,” Billy continues.
Tuck into some specky specials throughout the week, including $10 schnitzels on Mondays, $15 pastas on Tuesdays, $25 steaks on Wednesdays, and $15 burgers on Thursdays – take that cozzie livs (cost of living).
Complimenting the fare is a wine list that features local South Australian wineries with the likes of Barossa Valley’s Riesling Freak, McLaren Vale’s Gemtree Wines, and the Adelaide Hills’ Shaw and Smith.

The General Havelock is open Monday to Thursday from 11am ’til late, and Fridays and Saturdays through to 1am – cheers to that!
