Over the past few years, the word ‘vegan’ has become a normality on menus, across social media, within the Adelaide community, and around the world. The global movement has gained huge traction and we’d consider Adelaide to be blossoming in terms of the plant-based scene, partly thanks to the annual Vegan Festival which is making a return, but with a twist!
From the organisers that have been hosting the Vegan Festival in Adelaide since 2007; the East Terrace Parklands will see the celebration once again, although reimagined as Vegan Picnic. And due to severe weather warnings on the planned date of Sunday 30 October, the picnic will now be held on Sunday 11 December 2022. The celebration will be held across one jam-packed day, instead of the usual two, and is set to be a more-so casual version of the Vegan Festival which typically attracts an average of 16,000 attendees.
This year’s food focused Vegan Picnic is designed to show-off Adelaide’s most loved vegan food and drink vendors and retail outlets, with a whopping 50 plus stalls lined up; ready to entice vegans and vegan-curious folks alike. You won’t see the stages, workshops, demonstrations or kidzones this time around, it’s all about the community coming together in a big old vegan bubble.
But what is a vegan affair without the infamous Staazi & Co. Greek Vegan Project for a juicy yiros, Cherry Darlings Bakehouse for a cheeseburger pie, or Sassi Ice Cream for a Middle Eastern sweety treaty? Joining them in luscious Rundle Park/Kadlitpina are plentiful other delicious stalls at your vegan service, plus a few clothing and kitchen goods retailers and organisations to help educate individuals about why non-violence is so important.
