Just a mere 20 minute drive up the freeway, you’ll find yourself in the otherworldly German village of Hahndorf – a town famous for its tree-lined streets, German-style architecture and niche stores and eateries. Joining the line-up of Hahndorf’s scrumptious snack spots is a unique Middle Eastern-inspired ice creamery, Sassi Ice Cream.
Sassi has been known to frequent markets and be scoopin’ at pop-up shops around Adelaide since its inception in 2019 – so the name may just ring a bell. Now, you can find Sassi’s brand new caravan, Lulu, nestled within the picturesque White House venue on Main Street – a charming location where unwinding is definitely on the cards.
Sassi Ice Cream is a family-owned, South Australian business; founded by accredited dietitian and MasterChef contestant, Huda AlSultan, and her husband Adam Alhajji. Together, they make all of their sweet frozen delights by hand and from scratch, following original recipes and using premium natural ingredients free from any artificial additives, colours and flavours.
Sassi’s core range features seven wondrous flavours with their most popular being the baklawa dream ice cream, which draws on notes of the world-famous pastry dessert, combined with ground pistachio and delicate honey dates. Followed by the katayef ice cream with cinnamon crumbled walnuts, elevated with a drop of orange blossom. And an honourable mention to the sage ice cream with pomegranate swirl…drooling.
And if that isn’t enough to get you going – all of Sassi’s ice cream products are made using premium 100 per cent certified organic coconut as the base, as well as all of their offerings being gluten-free. Vegans and coeliacs – it’s a mecca of the good stuff.
Sassi owners Huda and Adam are Saudi Arabian and their ice creams are inspired by treasured desserts and flavours from their rich Middle Eastern heritage.
“What really makes Sassi Ice Cream stand out is our unique range of indulgent pleasures. Sassi takes authentic Middle Eastern desserts and craftily transforms them into ice cream that will blow you away,” Huda and Adam share.
“From elaborate combinations such as the lavish infusions in our saffron fever ice cream, Sassi Ice Cream is a masterpiece of mysterious notes of floral essences, roasted nuts and exotic spices.
“The vision of Sassi Ice Cream is to be the leader in Middle Eastern alluring flavours to those seeking unique experiences, and equally for those reminiscing the exceptional essence of traditional Arabian heritage. Sassi Ice Cream will transport you back to another time and place in the Middle East with each mouthful.
“Hahndorf is one of South Australia’s most loved tourism destinations, known for its artisanal food offerings and unique experiences, and that really fits into our vision,” Huda and Adam conclude.
