One Fringe festival is out, and another one is in with the return of the annual Adelaide Cabaret Fringe festival, set to dazzle audiences once again.
For the past 20 years, the Cabaret Fringe has made the winter months a little steamier, and from Friday 26 May through to Sunday 4 June, over 30 shows will be held across both city and metropolitan venues.
The 2023 program showcases a variety of local cabaret talent with shows for audiences of all ages, with each show independently-produced.
This year’s central hub, dubbed CabLive will be housed at the recently redeveloped (and stunning) art deco Piccadilly Cinema in North Adelaide. The intimate lounge will be transformed into a piano bar style date night hotspot over the coming weeks.
Each evening at CabLive, Dolly Diamond will host cabaret artists from within the festival and the wider community for a play space which gives you a glance behind the cheeky happenings of the cabaret scene – you’ll have to be there to see what is revealed.
Other highlights of the 2023 program include cabaret crowd favourite Choo and Peek at The Parks Theatre, the Secret Speakeasy Society at Woodville Town Hall, If I Were Elton John – Trippin’ With The Rocket Man and Lyra La Belle’s Hotties at Nineteen Ten, and Medusa’s Guide to Modern Dating at The Warehouse Theatre, to name a few!
While new initiatives include a clown cabaret of sorts with local icon and Frank Ford Award-winning theatre maker, Hew Parham and local theatre makers and comedians, Taylor Nobes and Nona Mona at Prompt Creative Centre.
Further, following their sold-out Adelaide Fringe season for Haiku For You, Alex and the Babes are bringing a daring show to The Howling Owl of nautical misadventures based on your suggestions, combining theatre, cabaret and maritime puns.
Cabaret Fringe’s Chair, Mark de Raad says, “At the heart of the Cabaret Fringe Association is supporting local arts, providing opportunity to encourage and present new and emerging works.”
“I am proud of what our small team of voluntary Board members has achieved, long may it continue to provide its enthusiastic and positive presence in our South Australia arts landscape,” Mark shares.
Not to be confused with the annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the world’s biggest cabaret fest, the Cabaret Fringe festival provides a platform for emerging and independent talent to get on the stage in front of willing audiences.
