Sir David Attenborough is Instagram’s newest star and he has something important to say.
Less than a year after Jennifer Aniston broke the record for the fastest Instagram user to reach one million followers, Sir David Attenborough has gone and smashed it by half an hour, racking up a million followers in just four hours and forty-four minutes.
A bit over twenty-four hours later, though, he now has three million followers and his two posts—videos, of course—have been watched more than twelve million times.
Not bad for a 94-year old.
Then again, this just isn’t any old man. This man is a living legend, an international treasure, and according to some, a god amongst men. When Sir David speaks, the world listens.
So, with the imminent release of David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet on streaming giant Netflix, the filmmakers behind the documentary have thought it a good idea for Sir David to communicate directly with the audience. After all, ”the world is in trouble.”

He says that ”continents are on fire, glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying …” but saving our planet is now a communications challenge, which is where Instagram and this new form of communication, for him, comes in.
”Over the next few weeks,” Sir David says, ”I’ll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them.”
If the staggering numbers on Sir David’s account are anything to go by, then we reckon this could just actually work. Or, it at least could get the conversation back on track.
We’re unsure if Sir David Attenborough’s Instagram will remain active after the release of the documentary, which looks back at his life and the changes he has seen in the world during his lifetime, but there’s only one way to find out and that’s by following along.
Jump across to his account now and watch his second post where he takes you back to 1968 and shows you the whole of humanity in one blue marble.
