Out with the old and in with the new – Rundle Street’s Two Pot Screamer has scrapped their 2022 restaurant venture and rebranded to a South-East Asian fusion restaurant, Paper Tiger.
The modern eatery are all set to open their doors to the East End crowd on Friday 14 April, where diners can expect cuisine which draws on inspiration from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia, in a sophisticated fit-out.
The 60-seat restaurant, designed by Sam Weckert boasts a modern take on Hong Kong’s neon-lit night markets, with a slight darkness which completes the humid, laneway atmosphere.
Paper Tiger’s kitchen on the other hand is headed by Benjamin Liew, having previously worked the kitchen at famed Rockpool Bar & Grill, French-Vietnamese restaurant Madame Hanoi, and most recently, Rundle Street noodle bar Minimono.
Ben holds a love for South-East Asian food, culture, and philosophy close to his heart, and shares that, “The menu has taken me 18 years to create, and it encapsulates my Malaysian upbringing, my
experience working with Japanese cuisine, and my experience experimenting with vegan ingredients.
“My mum is vegan, so I’ve grown up in a plant-based environment which has inspired my creativity,” Ben said, with Paper Tiger offering a full vegan tasting menu, alongside their omnivorous offering and a la carte dining.
Paper Tiger’s menu at a glance enlists Balinese roast pork, wagyu beef brisket stew, Singapore chilli soft shell crab, and Nyonya chicken curry.
While the dessert menu’s highlight includes an ice cream sandwich with aromatic vanilla-like flavours of the tropical pandan plant, coconut and black sesame, enclosed within a crisp fried steam bun.
“I will change my menus seasonally working closely with local producers to understand what is seasonal. Most of the menu items are handmade, so guests can really taste the freshness and quality food,” Ben continues.
While front of house manager and wine enthusiast, Karl Tang, former venue manager of neighboring restaurant Daughter in Law says, “Adelaide doesn’t really have a South-East Asian restaurant like this, with great service, a buzzing atmosphere and delicious food.”
Paper Tiger opens for its first service on Friday 14 April – might want to book in for this one!
