Although deep winter, the month of July in Adelaide never fails to bring the colours and joy of summertime, with a multitude of festivals and events spanning the thirty-one days. There’s Illuminate Adelaide’s Life Cycles, Winter Wonderland, and of course, Umbrella Festival. And in celebration of Music SA’s Umbrella Festival, a new interactive art installation is currently on display in Rundle Mall.
2022 Umbrella Festival artist, Emily Savage and multi-disciplinary artist, Dave Court have come together to create something quite special – an AR (augmented reality) interactive artwork at the King William Street end of the mall. The set-up features large cut-outs of Emily’s possum artwork along with Dave’s signature graphics – incorporating an element of interactive AR that you can partake in.
AR is an interactive experience where the real-life environment is transformed into a digital 3D animation through your smart phone or device via the Artivive App – without giving too much away.
Dave Court is an Adelaide-based, multi-disciplinary artist crossing boundaries of traditional paint and sculpture. His current work includes; large scale mural painting, event activation, venue design and creation of immersive installations. Dave has previously worked with Music SA on the City of Music mural project, which saw the artist create the largest painted mural in Adelaide’s CBD in celebration of its UNESCO City of Music designation in 2015.
Emily Savage is a graphic designer and illustrator, and creator of this year’s Umbrella Festival possum artwork. Her previous work includes; editorial illustrations for the University of Adelaide’s On Dit magazine and Orientation Week branding, as well as branding and animation for clients such as OzHarvest.
The possum-themed interactive installation will be present throughout the July music festival. And if you’re just hearing about Umbrella Festival now – since its inception in 2016, Umbrella Festival has become one of South Australia’s largest winter festivals. Their 2022 program boasts more than 175 events across Adelaide’s CBD, metropolitan suburbs and regional areas of South Australia between 1 and 31 July. Spanning over 90 venues, there will be something to feast your ears on throughout the entirety of the month. Read more about Umbrella Festival here!
